New Updates: Exciting News!

This blog hasn’t exactly been jumping lately, but I’ve been really busy with so many things as far as promoting Nevermor, and I haven’t even put a dent in what I’d like to do! Still, I’ve made progress in a good direction and wanted to let you know what I’ve been up to.

First, it’s been 2 weeks since the release and I’ve seen some decent sales so far. I met my sales goal for the first week, and they’ve sort of been trickling in beyond that.  As far as my budget, I have not quite made back what I put into it (including everything from the new cover to a bit of advertising) but I’ve made part of it back. And I won’t hate on the cover, because I think it was worth it. :p Hopefully it will catch up eventually, or at least let me break even by the second book. That’s my plan, at least.

I made the book available on Smashwords and recently approved it for further eBook distribution through their sales channels, which should come to be within the next few weeks, or sooner. These channels include: Sony, Barnes and Noble, Kobo, Apple, Diesel, Page Foundry, and Baker and Taylor. (Apple may take the longest because they review theirs manually.) So if you have been unable to get it through Kindle but you use another of these services, hopefully the book will be made available to you soon.

And for the most exciting thing… My files for print have been approved, and I just ordered a proof copy!! I am soooo excited about this! You know what that means! Nevermor is coming to print! The cover (front and back) looks so great and I cannot wait to have the copy in my hands! Somehow that will just make everything complete.

It may be a bit before I get the proof, and once I do, I’ll have to read through it again to approve it, so I don’t know how long it will be before it’s available to you. For now, it’s only going to be paperback, but I’ll give you more info about all this later. After reading about my options, I decided to use CreateSpace because it was simple, supposed to be good quality, and it didn’t cost me anything out of pocket, which was especially important based on my expenses so far. Currently, I’m trying to think of all this as a small business venture: I’m having to spend a little up front in order to gain more later. I hope.

I’m focusing on two things right now: making the book available to as many people as possible, and spreading the word about it. People won’t buy a book that they don’t know exists!

AGAIN (and probably for every post in the future) if you have read it, PLEASE review it publicly on Amazon or Smashwords or Goodreads! The book really needs this! Add it on Goodreads and talk about it in any way you can! Share it on Facebook! I can’t stress these things enough and it will only take a few minutes of your time!

For those of you who have been helping me, sharing and RTing, I appreciate it so much! I can’t say that enough either. :p Thank you!

Preparing for a new quest: Forsaken Dreamscape

As I work toward bringing Nevermor into print, I decided to go ahead and compile all my files for editing Forsaken Dreamscape. I was supposed to have already done this, and actually I meant to go back and read Forsaken while I was working on Nevermor, but it just didn’t happen. I was afraid my work in Forsaken would corrupt what I was currently doing, and so I neglected to read it at the time. But the time is coming when I have to dig in, and that time might as well be now.

It’s a bit daunting.

All I can think is that this effort is going to be a lot like gardening. I have to go through everything and weed out the things that I don’t need anymore/the things that are no longer true. I then have to find places to plant new seeds so that the story can grow. I already have several ideas and think I have a grasp on some of the things I need to change, but it’s just the matter of doing it.

Up until now, I’ve thought about going over it several times, but the idea of it all has completely overwhelmed me. It’s one thing to be staring at a blank page, faced with writing something fresh, but another when I’m looking at a tangle I’ve already created and wondering how to fix it.  Once again the image of a garden comes to mind. This novel is a completely overgrown garden of words and I don’t really know where to begin.

I don’t plan on talking about this one too much right now (one, because some of you may not have finished Nevermor, and two, because I want you to be surprised by the new changes later.) but here are a few things that you can expect:

  • The first several chapters will be rewritten (possible complete rewrites. I’ve always meant to do this but I’ve been too lazy. I’ve always hated the first bit!)
  • A much better character on Wren (Wendy’s) end and better character building all the way around.
  • New adventures and events (and some of the old ones will be changed somewhat)
  • The book will be longer. I’m not sure how much longer, but yes, longer!

So those are some things you can look forward to. But don’t expect it anytime soon! The way I see it in my head, I want to be sure I have complete control over the third book before I release the second, so it could be a while. I’ll keep you updated through, of course.

I haven’t decided which is harder: writing a completely new book from scratch, or trying to rework one that has already been finished. So far, I’ve had several people who have read Nevermor tell me that they really want to read the second book after finishing the first – which is excellent, since they’ve already read it! I’m sure you’re all anxious to see the changes, however.

It’s going to be so much better! I can’t wait! …now if I can just get started…

Nevermor is now on Smashwords! (Tomorrow, the world!)

Just spent allll day getting Nevermor ready for Smashwords and I finally managed to get it done! So, Nevermor is now on Smashwords! 😛

If you are one who wasn’t able to get the Kindle version, perhaps this will help you out. Smashwords has many formats that you can choose from to put on many devices from Kindle to Nook, to files you can read on PC or Mac. I tried to read up on the countries of distribution for these things, but I’m still a little bit in the dark. All I can tell you is to try it out if you weren’t able to get the Kindle version before.

I can’t say a lot about my experience with Smashwords so far, except that the things I had to do to prep my manuscript for their ‘meatgrinder’ were downright appalling. But I tried to follow their style guide down to the letter, and I think I came out with a pretty respectable document. It converted to EPUD format nicely, which is important for many retailers. The book is for sale on Smashwords currently, but as soon as I add an ISBN I can expand my distribution to most major retailers, which is very cool. Prepping it for Kindle was easier BY FAR, however.

Well, I’ve taken one more step to get my book out there. It’s been exciting and gratifying, but there has been so much to do! If I had a publisher behind me, I would at least have someone to be doing some of this marketing stuff for me. It’s neverending, but it’s pretty fun too. I’ll keep working! I have to see this through!

I want to remind you once again, and I know I harp on this, but if you are reading PLEASE leave a review on the site where you buy it from! Don’t just tell me personally –

Next! I get ready for PRINT!!

Additionally, I updated the Kindle version, smoothed it out a bit more and corrected a few mistakes. Hopefully I’ll get some news about that soon and those of you who have already purchased it will be able to get yours updated within the next few weeks. If you buy it new from the Kindle store, you will get the updated version, but if you have already purchased it, you’ll have to wait until I hear back from the people who judge whether or not my changes are big enough to send you an email about it or not…

It’s Not Over Yet! Nevermor is branching out!

So, now that Nevermor has been released on Kindle, what’s next? I’m glad you asked. I’ve spent this week editing (again) and making decisions on what direction I want to go in next. I’ve decided that the top priority is making Nevermor available to as many people as I can through as many channels as possible, so the next thing on my list is expanding the eBook reach.

As soon as I’m done with this editing round (about halfway through and hopefully this is the absolute FINAL round) I’m planning on setting up Nevermor on Smashwords. Why Smashwords? Well, because it’s simple, it’s free, and Smashwords will distribute (within a few weeks) to other major eBook sellers such as Nook, Apple store and so on. I could set all of these up individually myself, but I was finally reminded of the reason why I didn’t want to mess with that: the dreaded EPUB file conversion.

Setting up a file on Kindle is super easy, and fixing it for Smashwords is only a tiny bit more complicated. From there, Smashwords has a program called ‘the meat grinder’ which will take your file and convert it to EPUB and other formats. … Hopefully it won’t look like something a machine chewed up and spit back out. But this is the quickest, easiest way for me to get the book out there. International distribution is also very important to me. I know that some of my fans are not in the US, so I’m going to look into making it available in as many countries as I can!

Then! With the final version at the ready, I’m going to go through CreateSpace to set the book up as a paperback! (Exciting!) This process might take a while for me to set up, get a proof copy (which I’ll have to read AGAIN) but with any luck the paperback will be available within the next month or two for you to purchase!

Hardback version? Possibly. But that’s later.

My choices for the direction I’m taking are based on how Nevermor has done this first week, and where I have decided to focus my monetary effort. I have chosen to go cheaply (out of pocket) for the printing/distribution and focus my money on marketing. Having 500 copies of a book printed won’t do me any good if no one knows it exists.

Be sure to Like my Nevermor Page on Facebook:

If you are currently reading Nevermor, I want to remind you: please PLEASE write me up a review for Amazon! It’s soooo important that I get reviews and ratings on there! The number of reviews is possibly even more important than having GOOD reviews. Please don’t forget!! And don’t be shy about it!

Print Book Questions

I know that some of you have already delved into Nevermor by now, and I hope that you’re loving it! Personally, I’m reading it yet again myself, and even after working on it for so long, I’m still enjoying it! You’d think I’d be tired of it by now.

I’m still focusing on ways to market and also setting up the book for different E-publications, but I’m curious about what you’re all thinking at this point.

I’m here to ask a few questions. If you don’t mind, give me your thoughts. Thanks in advance for your participation!

NEVERMOR is out NOW! / Contest Winner!! / more about the new cover!!

FINALLY! Nevermor has arrived! Does it seem like it’s been forever, or not very long at all?  Either way, all my hard work has finally paid off! I’m so excited to have published it, also to have all of you read it. I feel that we’ve all been through this together, and that’s why I dedicated this book to all of you! Observe:

This book is dedicated to all my fans who have stood by me, and to anyone who’s ever dreamed – even if it was a bit dark and twisted.

That’s the inscription inside the book. 🙂  Because I couldn’t do this without your support!

Contest Winner!!: As you know, I held a contest to give away a free Kindle edition of the book. The number of entrants allows me to give away one copy, and I am pleased to announce the winner of that contest presently!

The winner of the free Nevermor ebook is…………..

Congratulations!!! And I hope you enjoy it!!

For the rest of you, not all is lost. The Nevermor Kindle edition is currently only $4.99, and there’s no time like the present!

This Kindle Edition book is chock-full of extras – from character and location descriptions, quotes, and more! (At least, I entered the extras, but they haven’t shown up yet unfortunately. Maybe it just needs some time.) But that’s not all!

Check out the amazing new book cover image done by Omri Koresh! Nevermor-KindleBasically, he took the initial idea I had and made it so much more amazing! I’ve been so excited for this since he started showing me the progress images, and it turned out so perfect that I don’t think I could have imagined it better! I think this image sets the right tone for the book. It shows the lovely side and the dark side of Nevermor. The little details are amazing (did you notice the fairy light shining through the leaf coat??) He worked from my descriptions of Rifter and Whisper, and I think they turned out pretty accurate.

This will be the image I use for the printed book whenever the time comes, but that’s a bit later! For now, I hope you all enjoy the ebook!

I could probably ramble on further, but I’m sure you’d rather be reading!

Just one more comment and I’ll shut-up: just because Nevermor is finally out, this blog is not over!! I still have 2 more books to go!

Here is the link for the Kindle store! I hope you love Nevermor as much as when it was Peter Pan (and hopefully more!)

Nevermor is getting new cover art, and it’s going to BLOW YOU AWAY!

I wasn’t going to announce this yet, but it’s actually coming along a lot faster than I anticipated! I hired an artist to create some original artwork for a new cover, thinking that I could at least get it by the time I decided what to do with the print copies, but he got right on it and it’s already done!!

It. looks. so. AMAZING!!!!! It’s beautiful and epic and dark and bad-ass all at once!

Seriously, I’ve been freaking out (and geeking out) about it since I saw it!  I was going to save it for the print version but it would be a serious shame not to go ahead and put it out there.  If this doesn’t sell some books for me, I don’t know what will!

Just try to say no to wanting the print version when you see this art. You’ll want it just to have a better look at this epic art by Omri Koresh!

Nope! You’ll have to wait until the 12th to see it! But let me just say, it is FANTASTIC!! I am so making it into a poster. Now he’s going to make me a back cover to go along with it, and then I’ll be set to go to press! As soon as I’m certain the book is perfect, that is.

I’m probably going to be fine tuning NEVERMOR up until the last possible minute, but my time is running down and it will be here before you know it! I’m so excited for all this! The new cover sets it off perfectly and I’m so happy it was ready on time for the initial release!

Tomorrow night, I’m going to announce the winner of the free copy contest, so you have a little more time to get in on that if you want!
