It’s no secret to anyone who might glance at this blog, but I’ve been a bit unmotivated lately. Chalk it up to what you will — real life, my day job, simple laziness — but none of that changes the fact that I haven’t released a book since Shadow Sun in November, and the saddest part is that I haven’t been working on much either.
Well, I can’t say I haven’t tried, but nothing has stuck with me. I feel that I don’t have enough time to just sit and think or really get into the imagery involved in writing a novel. Not like I used to. Sure, I’ve done a bit of editing on some older works, I’ve sent a few letters to agents, but what have I been doing for you? And what have I been doing to improve myself and my list of works? Nothing.
Recently, I’ve been changing — remembering that I can make as many excuses as I want, but nothing is going to happen unless I take matters into my own hands, try to do what I can for myself and never give up.
I’ve always thought of writers and painters and musicians along the same lines. Especially in the independent scene. Do bands record new songs, even before they find success? Sure they do. Do painters continue to present older works to new audiences? Of course. Why should writing books be different? Whether or not I’m ever discovered on a larger scale, I have to keep working now. That’s why I decided to do this in the first place.
If we slip into the mindset of ‘I’ve done all I can do’, then we’ll really be in trouble. I think that’s where I’ve been, but I don’t want to be there anymore.
The bottom line is that there is always more that can be done. Just looking around online has led me to see a change in resources that wasn’t there when I began to self-publish. Ingram Spark has print-on-demand services now, the e-book game is getting better, and there are so many blog entries about self-publishing and marketing to help authors find success.
I’m going to set some goals for myself this year, and even though the year is half done, there is still more for me to do.
I want to start a mailing list, set up a personal shop, and release another book by the end of the year. So, for anyone who thought I was dead, I’m not! I will be back, and I’m going forward with new inspiration!
Thanks to all of you who have continued to support me, and I promise you’ll be seeing more from me soon!
